GRIT the Ultimate Differentiator!

World-class athletes and elite coaches consistently view grit—the perseverance and passion for long-term goals—as the ultimate differentiator. They believe that while natural talent gets you to the top, it is the refusal to quit during adversity that creates a true champion.

GRIT can be learned and is a part of MINDSET education.  Presently the world is watching top athletes from around the world surmount incredible challenges to become world class athletes.  When interviewed these athletes and sports leaders emphasize the role of grit in several core ways.

The Ultimate Differentiator: Elite competitors note that at the highest level, the physical differences between top athletes are minimal. Sir Alex Ferguson who is widely considered the greatest soccer coach of all time, emphasizes that grit is the main attribute separating good players from great ones.

Overcoming Natural Talent: Pro American football stars like Rob Gronkowski, perhaps the greatest tight ends in NFL history, point out that highly talented athletes who lack hard work and resilience often falter, while grittier, less-naturally-gifted players consistently surpass them.

Reframing Failure: Icons like Michael Jordan and Serena Williams attribute their success to relentless improvement despite obstacles. Grit is what transforms inevitable failures and injuries into learning opportunities and stepping stones.

Daily Consistency: It isn’t just about pushing through a single tough performance, but the “stickability” to maintain relentless training, focus, and discipline day in and day out for years. Curaçao Goal Keeper Eloy Room demonstrated this GRIT as he made 15 saves against Equador.

Grit is critical in all walks of life.  The motto of the Think To DO Institute is “Seven Times Down, Eight Times UP;  this is the key to resilience.  Grit is the stamina to endure setbacks and keep working toward a meaningful future, often proving to be a stronger predictor of lifelong success than innate talent or IQ.  Because grit centers on growth mindset—the belief that skills can be developed through effort—it empowers individuals to view failures as learning opportunities rather than permanent roadblocks.  Just like our World Cup athletes, we must keep working toward success and a meaningful future.
